Celebrating 155 years of heritage
When the Hulscher Brothers opened a new beerhouse at the Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal in 1870, no one could have imagined how far the old Heineken Brewery would come. From its humble beginnings as a local brewery, Die Port van Cleve has stood the test of time, proving itself to be a constantly evolving staple in the heart of Amsterdam. Now celebrating 155 years of heritage and you can be a part of it!
8 Fundamental stories
To maintain the historic beauty of Die Port van Cleve, a large scale renovation has taken place. In the proces of redesigning the full interior of the 6 connected Amsterdam buildings, 8 stories from the extensive history of 'De Poort' were selected as the most fundamental for the place. From these 8 stories, 8 themes were created which serve as the base pillars for the renewed Die Port van Cleve. In each of the renovated rooms you can find one of the 8 themes on a storytelling wallpaper, displaying its history and emersing you in our rich heritage. To connect the 8 stories visualy with each other, the octagon shape was chosen. This shape can be found everywhere in the hotel, from the carpet in the hallways, to the curtains in the room and the seats in the restaurant, everywhere you look you are surrounded by the legacy of Die Port van Cleve.
To celebrate 155 years of Die Port van Cleve, we have organised a year-long celebration featuring various promotions and events connected to eight historical themes. Each period, one theme will take centre stage. This time, it is The Unity, which tells the story of how the Hulscher brothers opened the beer house Die Port van Cleve and their ongoing connection with G.A. Heineken, for the botteling of his Hooiberg beer in the years that followed.

The Unity
In this lively space, distinguished stockbrokers and large merchants, but also simple citizens, farmers and outdoor people, were eating quietly. Equality prevailed. Grades and classes fell away here. They did not know how to rush in that time. But every time one got up from his dining chair, it was immediately occupied again.
