When the Hulscher Brothers opened a new beerhouse at the Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal in 1870, no one could have imagined how far the old Heineken Brewery would come. From its humble beginnings as a local brewery, Die Port van Cleve has stood the test of time, proving itself to be a constantly evolving staple in the heart of Amsterdam. 8 Fundamental stories
To maintain the historic beauty of Die Port van Cleve, a large scale renovation has taken place. In the proces of redesigning the full interior of the 6 connected Amsterdam buildings, 8 stories from the extensive history of 'De Poort' were selected as the most fundamental for the place. From these 8 stories, 8 themes were created which serve as the base pillars for the renewed Die Port van Cleve. In each of the renovated rooms you can find one of the 8 themes on a storytelling wallpaper, displaying its history and emersing you in our rich heritage. To connect the 8 stories visualy with each other, the octagon shape was chosen. This shape can be found everywhere in the hotel, from the carpet in the hallways, to the curtains in the room and the seats in the restaurant, everywhere you look you are surrounded by the legacy of Die Port van Cleve.
To celebrate 155 years of Die Port van Cleve, we have organised a year-long celebration featuring various promotions and events connected to eight historical themes. Each period, one theme will take centre stage. This time, it is The Celebration, which tells the story of various milestones in the 155-year long history of Die Port van Cleve. From the celebration of the 25-year reign of the then king Willem III in 1874, to the monumental recognition by the Dutch Royal Household, awarding us Purveyor to the Royal Household by Royal Decree in 2021.
The Celebration
The beer house was well visited. The good name of 'De Poort', as the beer house was now popularly called, spread quickly through Holland. 'De Poort' received great recognition, without real organized advertisement. On special occasions they got attention by organizing extraordinary activities.
In May 1874, while celebrating the 25th reign of King Willem III, the whole facade was covered with a huge wooden fence, decorated with 7500 oil lamps. Together, these lamps resembled the original building 'Die Port van Cleve' as shown on the old gable stone.
