To maintain the historic beauty of Die Port van Cleve, a large scale renovation has taken place. In the proces of redesigning the full interior of the 6 connected Amsterdam buildings, 8 stories from the extensive history of 'De Poort' were selected as the most fundamental for the place. From these 8 stories, 8 themes were created which serve as the base pillars for the renewed Die Port van Cleve. In each of the renovated rooms you can find one of the 8 themes on a storytelling wallpaper, displaying its history and emersing you in our rich heritage. To connect the 8 stories visualy with each other, the octagon shape was chosen. This shape can be found everywhere in the hotel, from the carpet in the hallways, to the curtains in the room and the seats in the restaurant, everywhere you look you are surrounded by the legacy of Die Port van Cleve.
To celebrate 155 years of Die Port van Cleve, we have organised a year-long celebration featuring various promotions and events connected to eight historical themes. Each period, one theme will take centre stage. This time, it is The Glory, which tells the story of how the Hulscher brothers opened the beer house Die Port van Cleve and their ongoing connection with G.A. Heineken, for the botteling of his Hooiberg beer in the years that followed.

Celebrating 155 years of heritage
When the Hulscher Brothers opened a new beerhouse at the Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal in 1870, no one could have imagined how far the old Heineken Brewery would come. From its humble beginnings as a local brewery, Die Port van Cleve has stood the test of time, proving itself to be a constantly evolving staple in the heart of Amsterdam. Now celebrating 155 years of heritage and you can be a part of it!
The Glory
Gerard Adriaan Heineken, moved to the Stadhouderskade and over there expanded his global brand. The hulscher brothers together with Mr. Heineken decided to transform the brewery into a beer house. On 5 September 1870 the beer house was officially opened and from the first moment on it was crowded every night. In this beer house only beer brewed in the brewery "De Hooiberg" was serverd, which had an excellent quality. A location as large as Die Port van Cleve was a new understanding in Amsterdam.
