Celebrating 155 years of heritage
When the Hulscher Brothers opened a new beerhouse at the Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal in 1870, no one could have imagined how far the old Heineken Brewery would come. From its humble beginnings as a local brewery, Die Port van Cleve has stood the test of time, proving itself to be a constantly evolving staple in the heart of Amsterdam. Now celebrating 155 years of heritage and you can be a part of it!
8 Fundamental stories
To maintain the historic beauty of Die Port van Cleve, a large scale renovation has taken place. In the proces of redesigning the full interior of the 6 connected Amsterdam buildings, 8 stories from the extensive history of 'De Poort' were selected as the most fundamental for the place. From these 8 stories, 8 themes were created which serve as the base pillars for the renewed Die Port van Cleve. In each of the renovated rooms you can find one of the 8 themes on a storytelling wallpaper, displaying its history and emersing you in our rich heritage. To connect the 8 stories visualy with each other, the octagon shape was chosen. This shape can be found everywhere in the hotel, from the carpet in the hallways, to the curtains in the room and the seats in the restaurant, everywhere you look you are surrounded by the legacy of Die Port van Cleve.
To celebrate 155 years of Die Port van Cleve, we have organised a year-long celebration featuring various promotions and events connected to eight historical themes. Each period, one theme will take centre stage. This time, it is The Celebration, which tells the story of various milestones in the 155-year long history of Die Port van Cleve. From the celebration of the 25-year reign of the then king Willem III in 1874, to the monumental recognition by the Dutch Royal Household, awarding us Purveyor to the Royal Household by Royal Decree in 2021.
Emperor's crown
The building next to 'De Poort' was also purchased by the brothers. That became Bodega 'De Blauwe Parade' which was opened on 3 july 1880. Inside a great Delftsware tile frieze was applied by 'Koninklijke Porcelyne Fles'. The frieze shows a parade of children, simulating the historical triumphs from the Golden Century in honour of the emperor Maximilian. The emperor is recognized by its crown and the three crosses on his chest. These days the crosses are still visible in the Amsterdam city sign. They stand for heroism, determination and mercifulness.
